Reports from health authorities have indicated that the H1N1 Influenza A virus continues to be a global concern. The virus is a new strain of influenza A which can be transmitted from person to person. New strains of seasonal influenza A circulate every year in flu season.

The Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) is committed to ensuring the health and safety of its students and staff. CCSD addresses the spread of disease in the Infection Control section of our Occupational Health & Safety manual and actively consults with appropriate officials should any concerns arise.

In addition, we have also been advised by our District protocols to take the following actions at St. Ambrose School towards providing a safe and healthy school environment for all staff and students:

  • Hygiene and infection control posters are located in highly-visible areas of the school so staff and students have a visual reminder of hand washing and  cough/sneeze protocols
  • Caretaking staff to maintain an awareness of caretaking protocols, supplies and changes in cleaning processes.
  • Twice a day cleaning of high touch surfaces is carried out (door knobs, light switches, high traffic areas surfaces)
  • Hand sanitizing dispensers or liquid soap dispensers are available in high traffic / communal areas, washrooms, and in every classroom
  • Our nurse’s room is maintained as the school isolation room while students are awaiting transportation home.
  • Disinfectant wipes and district approved disinfectant spray are available for use to wipe down keyboards, telephones, hard surfaces, desk tops, etc.
  • Direct instruction to students on effective hand washing and cough/sneeze etiquette to teaching staff and students during school assemblies in October.
  • Collection of information regarding staff and student absences for flu like illness.  (Absences that reach 10% or higher are reported to our area superintendent and School Nurse)
