Under Pressure by Carl Honore

This book looks at childhood today. It guides us in understanding the health and well-being of our children.  It encourages parents to slow down, and to allow our children to be children. It demonstrates the need to reduce our children’s stress.

An excellent read for all parents and educators.

Parental Feedback:

Thank you Mrs. Devetten for your book of the month in April Under Pressure by Carl Honore.  It was a real education to read how children were and are raised in other time periods and other countries.  It really opened my eyes to how we are raising our children to be over achievers, but we are forgetting to let them just be kids.  I have never been a parent who has over scheduled my kids too severely but now I know even more so how important it is to let them be bored,  get creative and be the kids they want to be-not the kids we want them to be.  This book really made me think about the balance of homework, studying, playing and leisure in children the same as us adults deal with work/life balance.  It reminded me of the importance of family time and just being together without it being complicated by having to go somewhere and do something.  Sometimes we forget that our children will one day grow to be adults and I hope my children will become creative, independent, spirited human beings!  This book had great ideas on how to achieve these parenting goals. Mrs. Devetten please add more to your “book of the month” and include some summer reading to!  Thank you!
