June 2010 BGHS BandCongratulations to the Ghosts for recent events including their Annual Invitational Workshop attended by hundreds of junior high students and a half time performance at the Stampeders home game.

Best of luck to the Ghosts on their upcoming California tour and participation in the Stampede Parade.

Grade Twelve Awards Ceremony

Grade Twelve Bishop Grandin students were recognized at an awards ceremony held on June 15.  The Dr. Macleod Theatre was filled to capacity as proud parents, family and friends honoured and congratulated deserving students for all their efforts over the past three years.

Students who were unable to attend but received letters indicating they were recipients of an award, certificate or medallion, should  pick up their memento when they get their grad photo & CDs in the guidance dept. after June 18th.

Administration and teachers are very proud of our BG students and hope that students will continue to put their best efforts forward and continue to SHINE in the world!

Congratulations to Claudel Bourgea a grade 10 student at our school who was one of four students from western Canada chosen to participate in “Génies en herbe”.  Génies en herbe is a popular weekly game show on Radio-Canada Television that will test participants general knowledge, memory and logic.

 The Student Advisory Council is a group of student representatives from each school in the district who meet to discuss various issues. They offer the students’ opinion on various questions brought up by the district. Once a year, however, they meet for another purpose: just getting together and experiencing something fun and different. This year, the location of choice was the Drop-In Centre.

Senior Boys Soccer-City Champions

It was the perfect end to the season for the Bishop Grandin Ghosts on Tuesday night.

After jockeying with the Western Canada Redmen all year for top spot in Division 1, the Ghosts’ senior boys soccer team finally won the battle that mattered and claimed the city title with a 2-1 victory at the Calgary Soccer Centre.

“We had a great year,” said Ghosts’ head coach Bert Joines. “It’s one of the more skilled teams I’ve had at the school, so I’m very happy with them.”

Provincial Track Meet Final Results

Congratulations to our track athletes who traveled to Medicine Hat on Friday, June 4th to take part in the Provincial Track meet. Our team had a strong showing with many top five finishes. Individual results follow:

Jesaiah Coy – 2nd in 800 m Intermediate Run, 4th in Boys 100 m Intermediate Hurdles, 5th in Intermediate 400 m Dash.

Matthew Sinclair – 3rd in Junior Pole Vault

 Lexi Streu – 5th in Girls Intermediate 3000 m Run

 Jejyrah Talbase – 5th in Junior Girls 1 kg discus

First Nations Métis and Inuit High School GraduationBishop Grandin High School hosted the Calgary Catholic First Nations Métis and Inuit High School Graduation on June 2nd. The theme of this wonderful celebration of culture, community and student success  was a “Celebration of Resilience”. Fourteen Bishop Grandin graduates were recognized, more than any other high school. Congratulations to Tanisha Whitney who received the award for Vocational Honours. Featured in the picture with Tanisha is Norma Denny, Grandin’s Aboriginal Education Teacher.

Bishop Grandin Ghosts football players were inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, May 28. Wade Buteau, Bruce Demert, Warren Ecker, Carl Gratton, Tim Karbonik and Greg Vavra were all members of the U of C Dinos Football Team that won three unprecedented consecutive Hardy Cup Championships from 1983-1985 and two Vanier Cup Championships.   Congratulations to these former Grandin Ghosts!  A story about this accomplishment appeared in the Calgary Herald.  Follow this link to read the whole story.

Advanced Placement

 Another year has flown by and our students have now completed writing their Advanced Placement exams.  This May, 121 students from grades eleven and twelve wrote 163 exams in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Calculus AB, European History, English Literature, French Language and Spanish Language.  As well, eleven Art students completed the rigorous process of completing portfolios to meet the requirements of Studio Art. Congratulations to all of the students and to their teachers for the time and effort required to prepare for these challenging exams and portfolios.
