 Diverse Learner Support

Special education refers to the education of students with mild, moderate, or severe disabilities and those who are gifted and talented. It is founded on the belief that all children can learn and reach their full potential given opportunity, effective teaching and appropriate resources. Instruction, rather than setting, is the key to success and decisions related to the placement of students are best made on an individual basis in a manner that maximizes their opportunity to participate fully in the experience of schooling. All students with special education needs have an Individualized Program Plan (IPP). In Alberta, educating students with special education needs in inclusive settings is the first placement option to be considered by school boards in consultation with parents and, when appropriate, students.

The education of students with special needs is a collective responsibility and Bishop Grandin has designated special education teachers to support this; however every teacher is responsible for being familiar with the special needs of the students he or she teaches, participating in the individual program plans for these students and making the appropriate instructional adaptations to level the playing field and help students with special needs achieve at their highest level. In 2009 – 2010 Bishop Grandin had 207 students with specific Alberta Education exceptional student codes

Though there are several programs at Bishop Grandin to support students with exceptionalities, well over half of our students with codes do not belong to any additional programs and are served through their Individual Program Plans, support from their teacher advisors, classroom teachers and counselors and the Bishop Grandin learning centre.
