ADVANCED PLACEMENT

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program provides motivated students the opportunity and the challenge to pursue university level studies while still in high school.  The key ingredients of this endeavour are acceleration and enrichment, both vertical and lateral.  As a bonus, this program also provides students with an opportunity to enter a large number of universities with advanced placement and, in some cases, advanced credit in selected subjects.

 Typically, the Advanced Placement student will have the following characteristics:

  • a record of success in school, particularly in the prerequisite subject;
  • a motivation to reach an even higher level of personal achievement;
  • a well developed work ethic including a positive attitude toward learning and the consistent production of high quality work.
  • a serious commitment to and recognition of the importance of  education;

 The adoption of this program enables the academically capable students to participate in high school courses that they may find more challenging.  The AP program will be characterized by the following:

 each course will meet Alberta Education requirements as well as qualify the student to write the Advanced Placement exam.

  • to accomplish the above, it is necessary to engage students in an accelerated and enriched program in grade ten, eleven, and twelve.
  • students in Advanced Placement will not be penalized in their opportunity for scholarships and bursaries.  Care will be taken to evaluate students in their Alberta Education courses by the same standards as would apply had they enrolled in the regular program.Â
    at the conclusion of each grade-level AP course, the student’s final grade and the recommendation of the teacher shall be considered for admission to the next level in that course.

 Advanced Placement courses will be offered, enrollment permitting, in the following areas:  Art, English, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies, French Language Arts and Spanish.
