What is Advanced Placement?
The Advanced Placement (AP®) Program is a cooperative non-profit educational endeavour between secondary schools and post-secondary institutions. It gives high school students exposure to university-level material through involvement in an AP course, and then gives them an opportunity to achieve advanced placement and/or credit at the post secondary level. This means that the student may be able to move directly into a second year university course while still receving credit for the first year course. Since the program’s inception in 1955, approximately 9 million students have taken over 15 million AP Examinations worldwide. More than 3500 Colleges and Universities are then able to grant credit, placement, or both to the successful students.
AP Exams, which are set and marked externally, maintain the programs’ sterling reputation for excellence. These exams are a significant part of the AP Program but they are not the only part. Enriched AP courses, taught by dedicated and committed high school teachers, lay the groundwork for students to succeed on AP and post-secondary examinations.
