Young children benefit from programs that provide opportunities for purposeful play through which children explore the world around them.

The following guiding principles provide a framework for Kindergarten programming:

  • Childhoods differ depending on social and cultural circumstances.
  • Children’s development is influenced but not determined by their early experiences.
  • Children interact and learn in a variety of contexts.
  • Children are co-constructors of knowledge and partners in learning.
  • Children are unique and active contributors to their learning.
  • Children construct and represent knowledge in a variety of ways.
  • Children are citizens and active participants in school and society.
  • Children are active collaborators in and users of assessment.
  • Children may require specialized programming and supports to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes that prepare them for later learning.
  • Children and their families may need coordinated community services to meet their needs.

There are seven learning areas within the Kindergarten Program Statement:
• Early Literacy
• Early Numeracy
• Citizenship and Identity
• Environment and Community Awareness
• Personal and Social Responsibility
• Physical Skills and Well Being
• Creative Expression

The Calgary Catholic School District is proud to meet the unique needs of its students by offering a wide range of educational options and alternative programs.

Language Programs
As our environments are becoming increasingly multi-cultural, it is beneficial for students to learn a second language. Learning a second language greatly contributes to a student’s educational experiences, personal growth and development of higher level thinking skills.

A variety of our elementary schools are proud to offer students one of the following language programs:

  • French Immersion (for a list of schools that offer this, click here)
  • Spanish Bilingual (for a list of schools that offer this, click here)
  • Italian Language and Culture (for a list of schools that offer this, click here)

No previous background in the language is necessary to enter the program. For more information about these programs, contact the school or call 298-1394.

Year Round Schooling
Currently two elementary schools offer a modified calendar. Kindergarten and Grade 1 entry are available at Monsignor Neville Anderson School (403-500-2094) and Our Lady of Fatima School (403-500-2112).

How to Register
Registration is ongoing throughout the school year. A child who turns four years old on or before March 1 is eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall of that same calendar year. For example, this means to register for kindergarten in September 2013, a child must turn four years old on or before March 1, 2013. The child’s birth certificate should be presented at the time of registration. Contact your local elementary school for more information. All families are encouraged to inquire.
