2010 Stay in School Ski Day Contest Winners

Jun. 23, 2010

The Calgary Educational Partnership Foundation (CEPF) sponsors many events for students throughout the school year to enhance student learning opportunities. One of these events is the “Stay in School Ski Day.”

This year's event was held at Nakiska and marks the 19th year that students have been able to ski for a day with a mentor. Skiing with a mentor helps students to make  positive connections with other adults. Being mentored encourages students to make positive life choices, one being to stay in school. As well, students are able to develop or enhance their social and problem solving skills.

Students who are chosen for the “Stay in School Ski Program” had pre and post work to complete before and after their ski day. After the ski day at Nakiska, students were asked to write an essay about the impact of their ski day with their mentors. Three students were chosen as winners of the essay portion and wrote about the positive impact of the “Stay in School Program” on their lives.

On May 27, 2010 at Our Lady of the Assumption School,  three winners were announced and were presented with an award:

  • Alonya Lewis from Our Lady of the Assumption
  • Muranda Kopchuk from Our Lady of the Assumption
  • Tiannah Mansell from St. Michael

The President of Calgary Education Partnership Foundation, Kevin Reeves, spoke to the students at Our Lady of the Assumption School about CEPF and the impact the “Stay in School Ski Program” has had on the three students. A section from each student’s essay was read by Reeves, which helped communicate the positive impact and the effects the “Stay in School Ski Program” can have upon students.

Trustees Serafino Scarpino, Lois Burke-Gaffney and Rosemarie Goerlitz congratulated the students receiving their awards along with St. Michael School Prinicpal Christine Cusanelli, Ms. Gauthier teacher from St. Michael’s School, and Ms. Keleher from CEPF.

Congratulations to the recipients!
