CCSD Community Gathers for Opening Mass

Sep 1, 2010

Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) staff members and trustees came together as a community, joined by Bishop Fred Henry and parish priests at the Jubilee Auditorium on August 31 to celebrate the 2010 District Opening Mass.

This yearly tradition provides District employees an important opportunity to gather together in one place and reaffirm our commitment to strive to understand our own personal faith, and to work with others to support the unique contribution Catholic education makes to the common good.

The event’s program began with a procession of banners from each of our schools. Board of Trustees Chair, Marge Belcourt as well as Chief Superintendent Lucy Miller delivered greetings and Bishop Frederick Henry led the mass and prayers. To read Dr. Miller's Opening Mass message, click here.

Near the end of the mass, a special presentation was made in honour and recognition of the work that the parishes and the priests do to support our district and our schools. The Bishop, the Vicar and each parish priest was gifted a colourful stole given on behalf of the Calgary Catholic community.

For the coming school year, CCSD is continuing with their spiritual theme which is “You are the light of the world: Shine!” Jesus tells each of us that we are the light. We each have a mission and in Catholic education are called to live that mission through our work, to let God’s light shine through each of us. This theme will be used throughout the year as a focus for school-based, board and public celebrations, as well as liturgies and other events.

The Opening Mass marks the most important event of the District’s school year. It was a special opportunity for everyone to join together in song and prayer, regardless of faith, to welcome new employees and celebrate the start of another successful school year.
