4th annual Calgary Catholic Run & Walk raises over $32,000 for charity

Sep. 25, 2012

Calgary Catholic employees, their families, friends and retired staff gathered at Glenmore Athletic Park to participate in the fourth annual Calgary Catholic Run & Walk on September 22, 2012.

A total of 741 participants registered in either a 5 km or a 10 km run/walk, as well as entered their young children in a “Little Legs” race. There were also 220 volunteers and performers in attendance.

The event was an opportunity to come together with a focus on community, health, fitness and charity. Bishop Fred Henry led the event with a prayer before the races began. To kick off the event, Heather Liscano, a teacher from Don Bosco School and the voice of the Calgary Flames sang "O Canada." Police Chief Rick Hansen also attended along with a police motorcade. Pre and post-race activities and events included warm-up activities before the race and several of our high school mascots were in attendance to cheer participants on and help start the ‘Little Legs’ race.

The moving and fun did not stop even after the races were done as there were several bands who kept the atmosphere lively and the crowd entertained. Thank you to the ADHOC Band and Bishop Grandin Marching Band for performing at the event.

The event ended with award presentations and cheque donations to this year's two designated charities: the Calgary Catholic Education Foundation and Inn from the Cold. Each charity received a total of $16,230 as a result of funds raised from the Calgary Catholic Run & Walk.

First, 2nd, and 3rd place medals were awarded to the male and the female winners of the 10 km and 5 km events. Please click here to view the race results.

In addition special awards were presented to school/work site locations. Mother Mary Greene School had the highest number of staff and family members participate and won 1st place in the Participation award for the third year in a row! Staff from schools and work site locations showed their team spirit by wearing team colors and costumes, but St. Sebastian School staff members once again took home the 1st place Spirit award for their outfits. Please click here to view a list of all award winners.

Thank you to the many volunteers that generously donated their time and effort to ensure the event was a success. As well, thank you to our many sponsors for their generous support. Please click here to see a list of sponsors for this year's event.
