Job description

This is a temporary position until June 26, 2014.


Under the direction of the classroom teacher, and the supervision of the Principal, and as a member of the student’s Learning Team, this position provides assistance in educational, behavioral and/or health related programming for students with diverse learning needs. This includes Educational Support (ES) II, III, Starting Points, Observation, classes and Elementary, Junior High and High School Transition Programs.

• Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team providing one-on-one support for Individualized Program Plan goals and objectives as directed by the teacher
 • Fosters a safe, calm and positive learning environment
 • Compiles student data through observation, under the supervision of the classroom teacher
 • Prepares materials, constructs and assembles displays, and duplicates classroom material in support of  students with special needs
 • Participates in ongoing professional development related to the learning profiles of students in the congregated program
 • Assists with student self-care (dressing, toileting, etc.)

• Education:  
- Category 4: High school diploma or equivalent
- Category 5: Degree, Diploma or Certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution or an equivalent of a minimum one (1) year full-time post-secondary course study may be considered. 
 • Demonstrated successful experience with special needs students
 • May require any of the following depending upon assignment:
-certified in emergency first aid (EFA) and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- behaviour management training
- lifting techniques
- rehabilitation experience
- restrictive intervention practices 
 • Ability to deal with the social/emotional and mental health challenges of working with groups of children who are often active and demanding
 • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
