Father Whelihan : School Closure Information
Updated Sunday June 24th:
Dear Parents of Father Whelihan School,
Re: School Update:
The Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) has been working 24 hours a day to gather information related to the current state of emergency in and around the city. Our team of superintendents and Support Services staff have been working closely with CEMA, City Police, Fire, Alberta Education, CBE and other important groups in Calgary to make decisions related to our schools.
To avoid putting additional stress on our transit systems, roads and bridges and to aid emergency responders with their work, the CCSD and CBE are closing schools for Monday, June 24, Tuesday, June 25 and Wednesday, June 26. The government of Alberta is supportive of this decision.
In recognition of the city’s need, we are opening all elementary, middle and junior high schools in non-evacuated zones of the city on Thursday, June 27 in the morning to give schools some time to gather as a school community and close the year.
Our school will be open at our regular start time of 8:20 a.m. on Thursday and students will be dismissed at noon. Our staff is busy planning activities for Thursday morning. All students Kindergarten (both am and pm classes) to Grade 9 will take part in these activities followed by a hot dog bbq lunch. Progress reports will be distributed to all students K-9 prior to summer dismissal at 11:45.
Students are asked to return their textbooks and other school property on Thursday and be prepared to take home all personal belongings at that time. Junior high students who need to have their bus passes scanned may come to the office any time this week to do so.
Please note that staff will be at school all week should you have any questions or need to access student belongings. If your son/ daughter will not be in attendance on Thursday morning, please inform the school. Students not returning on Thursday may return their text books earlier. Students not in attendance on Thursday will have their progress reports mailed to them.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school.
Rock and Roll all Night and “STUDY” Everyday
Last Thursday Fr. Whelihan school was ‘rockin’. 14 student bands, under the direction of Mr. Troy Sicily, performed during the Fr. Whelihan year-end concert themed ‘let there be rock’. Bands performing included Electric Blanket, In Tune, Devious, Toxic Walruses, The Anthem, People Who Play Music, The Highlighters, G.G., Burn the Witches, Revenge, Blind Music, The Others and Mosh Potatoes.
The bands, each of which consisted of a lead singer, guitarist, bassist / keyboard player and drummer, have been learning the history of rock music as well as the artistry and the performance of rock and roll. The evening began with a PowerPoint presentation introducing the capacity audience to the bands and got everyone in the mood for what turned out to be a wonderful show.

“Fill Your Freezer” Fundraiser
Dear Parent Community,
Our School and Parent Council are completely overwhelmed and impressed by the support given towards the “Fill Your Freezer” Fundraiser.
At this point, it looks like we will surpass our goal. Conversely, our vendors are also overwhelmed with the quantity of product they are to supply. Therefore, the pick-update for orders will be bumped back a week to Thursday, March 14th. Please note this is the same date as Parent/Teacher interviews. Hopefully, not making this too much of an inconvenience.
Again, thank you so much for the support.

We are pleased to include the following vendors in our fundraiser: Coco Brooks Pizza, Consumer Direct Meats, Spolumbo’s Sausage, and IN-DEY-Go cookie dough. All order forms are attached. All products are freezer ready – great to restock after the holidays; there is something for everyone.

There is a new extra-curricular project based club that is being offered to students in grades 5 – 9. Creating a Science Fair project is an exciting opportunity for students to develop, design and execute a finished study or experiment related to a topic in science that reflects their own choice. Students will be given the opportunity to receive support in developing their project at school, but will also be required to complete a large component of their project at home. Students will present their finished projects during a “Fair” held in the month of February.
The Father Whelihan Science Fair will take place on Friday, February 8th 2013. Set up for this day will occur on Thursday, Feb. 7th. Projects will need to be completed by this deadline. After the Father Whelihan Science Fair, some projects will qualify to go to the Calgary Youth Science Fair that will run from April 17th, 19th and 20th, at the Olympic Oval.
