Learning Centre
Bishop Grandin Learning Center
The Bishop Grandin Learning Center has evolved over the last six school years to provide support to a wide variety of students at the school. The learning center is designed to provide support to students with or without a diagnosed learning disability who are registered in mainstreamed programs at the school. Our Aboriginal Support teacher also works through the learning center.
The growth of the learning center is reflected in the high degree of academic success of our students. At any time on any day one can drop into the learning center and see students from all over the school working together with the support of teachers and assistants as they progress through their courses.
All students with an identified learning disability are scheduled into the learning center for academic support. In addition, these students are registered in a Learning Strategies course that helps them understand themselves as learners. The ultimate objective of this course is to develop critical self-advocacy skills so that these students are able to engage in further studies with a complete understanding of their learning needs along with a set of personal skills that allow them to deal with learning both now and in the future.
Special Education
Our Educational Support (ES) programs are offered in a specialized class setting for students who have significant cognitive delays. Our ES I and II programs are staffed with two experienced special education teachers and several assistants who meet the needs of about twenty students.
The ES Programs look to provide meaningful integrated experiences in program areas of the school as well as support students in life and work skills that assist them in becoming independent members of our community. By the time that our ES students leave Bishop Grandin High School they will master basic academic skills in Communication, Numeracy and life skills. ES students also build experience in work settings both in and out of the school environment.
