Welcome to June at
St. Alphonsus School!
Father’s Day Weekend Blessings Everyone!
I know our elementary students were bursting with pride as they walked out the doors with their gifts this afternoon! I hope your Father’s Day is blessed with love whether you are able to be with your dad, talk on the phone or send up a prayer for him.
The Grade 2 class was very supportive when I shared with them that this is my first father’s day with out my dad. They offered me many ideas of placing flower’s on my dad’s grave, praying for him and having cake in his memory. I was filled with thankfulness for being able to share our love of God so openly in Catholic School! Once again, I note that your children are amazing!
Reflecting on our past week, I sent out many accolades to our School Council for hosting our annual Family BBQ. I especially note a BIG bouquet to Michelle Harris for organizing with a small but mighty group of parent volunteers to assist with food preparation, BBQing and clean up. God bless you for lending your hands! Thanks also to the parents who volunteered on our Grade 7 and 8 Italian Feast Walk on Wednesday as well.
I have attached an exam schedule for our Grade 6 to 9 students that was published in the June Newsletter as well as a Junior High Honor Roll Letter and JH Recognition Criteria. Medallion recipient letters were sent home with students today. Honor Roll Certificate Recipients are able to be determined after Wednesday, June 18 as pre-exam marks are finalized. Please note that final exams are not included in honor roll due to time restrictions of students writing on the last day of school. Our recognition criteria was published in the fall and sent home with students in the November Progress Report. Mrs. Macgillivray has been goal setting with our JH students throughout the year in health class.

June is our Time to Celebrate Learning, Life and Friendships!
Last night we celebrated our Grade 9 Class of 2014 with a mass and ceremony identifying their achievements over the years. Students shared letters with their parents and received certificates and a journal as their “future remains unwritten”.
Friday June 6 Greetings Everyone!
It is hard to believe that the first week in June is already over!
I extend my thanks to everyone who came out to watch our Elementary play, “Assignment Earth” on Tuesday and Wednesday! We are so proud of our students under the direction of Ms. Fabiano and Ms. deSomma for their outstanding performances! And thank you for always supporting our school!
We also honored and bid farewell to our outstanding Grade 9 class of 2014 last evening. Father Ugo warmly presided at Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Parish and made us feel very welcome. A special thanks to Ms. Ball for organizing all the refreshments and the hall! Also, to our Grade 9 teachers Mr. McDonald, Ms. Weiss and Mr. Collins for organizing the liturgy and to our music team of Ms. Riegel, Ms. Castelo and Mr. Haley who worked with our choir!
Currently, our JH Track team is competing at Glenmore Athletic Park under the coaching of Ms. Arcuri, Mr. Monaghan and Mr. Collins – our prayers of support are with them!
We appreciate all the parents who were able to attend our Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on Wednesday. If you volunteered this year, but were unable to attend, please send me an email or give Norma a call at the office as we wish to ensure you receive a package of our student “Art Cards” that were presented as our thank you gifts!
Next week there are a number evening events at St. Alphonsus that we invite parents to attend. Please see below for the details!

Extravaganza Venue Change May 28, 2014
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are very excited to count down to our Fine Arts Extravaganza tomorrow night (May 28) at the University Theatre.
Please note this concert was originally scheduled for the Rosza Theatre but will now be held at the Eckard-Gramatte Hall located in the University Theatre (which is directly across the road from the Rosza Centre to the East). This venue is where our Elementary Advent Concert is regularly held. The address is near 2500 University Drive N.W. within the University of Calgary Campus. For your convenience, we have included a map at the bottom of this update. The University Theatre is marked: UT.
Please note that in this new venue, our visual arts will be showcased in three distinct areas: one in the front foyer, one in the upper seating level and one in the upstairs mezzanine. We will have signage posted to direct your viewing.
If you have not purchased your tickets as of today, tickets will be available at the University Theatre door for $8.00. Gallery viewing opens at 6:00 pm with musical performances starting at 7:00 pm.
We look forward to seeing you there as we celebrate the creativity and talents of our students together!
