St. Jean Brebeuf Students Rise To The Top
ST. JEAN BREBEUF STUDENTS RISE TO THE TOP
By Brenda Diteljan, Consultant Gifted Programming
Saturday, April 13, 2013 proved to be a very special celebration of student achievement for Lorcan C. and Peter F., grade nine students at St. Jean Brebeuf Junior High School. Lorcan and Peter participated in the Calgary Law Day – Burnet, Duckworth and Palmer LLP Public Speaking and Advocacy Competition at the Calgary Courts Centre.
Peter placed first in the Junior High competition and won $200.00. Peter spoke about who owns and has the rights to the thousands of daily uploaded photos and videos on social networks (i.e. Facebook). Mrs. Varner, the students’ Language Arts Teacher, attended the event and shared that Peter’s winning speech was delivered confidently, articulately and with ease, as he knew his topic very well. Lorcan’s speech, about whether we should have guards with guns in schools to protect our students, led him to the semi-finals. Lorcan loved the experience, as he met many interesting people. Members of the Bar and Judges of the Court of Queen’s Bench judged the finalists on the effectiveness of the effort as a whole, the text (reasoning and originality), delivery and emotional appeal. To acknowledge and commemorate this great achievement, St. Jean Brebeuf will be receiving a trophy from the sponsors of the event, Burnet, Duckworth and Palmer. The Calgary Catholic School District is very proud of Peter and Lorcan’s achievement, as many speech competitors were from private schools. Peter, who won first place in the Junior High competition, claimed to enjoy the experience, appreciate the $200.00 and looks forward to future speech competitions. Onward and upward Peter; well done!
Understanding Anxious Teens

Staffing Update
Good Afternoon Parents/Guardians,
I hope that you had an enjoyable Easter break with family and friends.
As you were aware, Mr. Kelleher had made the decision on March 27 to remain at Brebeuf and not return to Ireland. However, on Thursday, April 4 I received an email from Mr. Kelleher indicating that he unfortunately had to resign again for personal reasons and his circumstances changing as of Thursday afternoon (April 4).
Therefore, as of today, Miss Alexandra Ball with be taking over for Mr. Kelleher as was the original plan prior to the Easter break. Miss Ball and Mr. Kelleher had meet on several occasions before the Easter break to go over the transition etc. so there should be little to no disruption to the delivery of the curriculum.
We welcome Miss Ball to our Brebeuf school community and wish Mr. Kelleher much success, happiness and good health in his homeland of Ireland . If you have any further questions please direct then to myself at 403-500-2046 or via email tony.dalcin@cssd.ab.ca . Although Mr. Kelleher only taught our Gr. 9 students, we felt that it was important to let all of our school community know. Thank you.
Regards,
Tony
