St. Stephen Global Diversity Day!

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Celebrate the Difference!

Dear Parents,

The staff and students of St. Stephen School are excited to announce that our first ever Global Diversity Day will take place on Friday, May 7th, 2010. As a part of the 21st Century Learning Program at St. Stephen School, Global Diversity Day will be a celebration of the cultural diversity in our school. Students have been busy completing activities focussed around the theme of diversity and how their own, individual cultures help to make them who they are. We are now ready to share what we have done!

Itinerary for the day:

8:35 am – School day begins. All students report to homerooms.

9:00-9:20 am – Opening ceremony in the gym

9:30-10:45 am – Elementary classes – rotate through elementary classes and activity stations

-          Junior High classes – Diversity Fair – students have created displays and activities celebrating diversity. Students will travel through three “Zones”. Your child may be asked to bring in artefacts, costumes, food etc. that celebrate a culture. Parents are welcome to assist their children with displays and/or participate in the display.

10:45-11:15 am – Students return to homerooms for a snack break and to receive their free Diversity   Day t-shirt (students have already been asked for sizes) designed by one of our students!

11:30-12:30 – Main stage event featuring:

-          A performance by our DanceWorks dance troupe

-          A performance by our Senior Band

-          A performance and keynote by acclaimed African Drummer – David Thiaw

12:30 – 1:15 – Lunch (Please make note of the adjusted lunch time for students who go home for lunch)

1:15-3:00 – Elementary classes have designed SMART Board pages of their own and will have an opportunity to see their creations followed by a craft station where they will be making medicine wheels.

-          Junior High classes will participate in Home Room challenges and a Pep rally celebrating our teams!

We are excited to have the opportunity as a school to celebrate both the outstanding work that our students have done, but also to celebrate the cultures and people that help to make St. Stephen a special place.

We would like to invite any parents who are able to join us in celebrating Diversity Day in the morning. The students are looking forward to the opportunity to show what they have done – feel free to join us.

We look forward to seeing you on May 7th, 2010.

Yours truly,

John Mooney

Principal
