Transportation Eligibility

The Education Act and School Transportation Regulation require us to provide transportation for students who meet certain criteria. Additionally, we have decided to provide transportation for students who meet other criteria. This page explains which students are eligible to receive transportation.

Eligibility for transportation to and from a school often depends on the location of a student’s residence relative to the school and the school’s regular attendance area or Program of Choice attendance area. Most schools have a regular attendance area, and some schools have both a regular attendance area and a Program of Choice attendance area. A school that offers only Programs of Choice (and no regular education program) has only a Program of Choice attendance area and no regular attendance area.

Kindergarten and Elementary Students
A student enrolled in kindergarten or elementary school (Grades 1 to 6) is eligible to receive transportation if the student meets all the following criteria:

  • the student is enrolled in the school
  • the student resides inside the City of Calgary
  • the student resides inside the school’s regular attendance area or Program of Choice attendance area
  • the student resides at least a certain distance from the school, as specified in our annual Fee and Rebate Schedule.

Please complete Form 560-1 if your child meets all the criteria above and you wish to apply for transportation. Please hand deliver or email the completed form to your child’s school.

Junior and High School Students
A parent of a student enrolled in junior or high school (Grades 7 to 12) is eligible to receive a monthly Calgary Transit bus pass rebate if the student and the student’s parent meet all the following criteria:

  • the student is enrolled in the school
  • the student resides inside the City of Calgary
  • the student resides inside the school’s regular attendance area
  • the student resides at least a certain distance from the school, as specified in our annual Fee and Rebate Schedule
  • the student’s parent purchases Calgary Transit bus passes directly from Calgary Transit or an authorized vendor.

A parent of a student who is enrolled in a Program of Choice at a junior or high school outside the regular attendance area in which the student resides does not qualify for Calgary Transit bus pass rebates.

Please see our Calgary Transit Rebate page for more information about how to apply for a Calgary Transit bus pass rebate.

Students enrolled in Programs of Choice
A student who is enrolled in a Program of Choice may be eligible to receive transportation. Currently, students enrolled in only the following Programs of Choice are eligible to receive transportation:
  • Elementary School French Immersion
  • Elementary School Spanish Bilingual
  • Elementary School Fine Arts

A student enrolled in a Program of Choice listed above must reside in the applicable Program of Choice attendance area to be eligible to receive transportation.

Students outside their Attendance Areas
A student who is enrolled in a school and resides in neither the school’s regular attendance area nor the school’s Program of Choice attendance area is generally not eligible to receive any transportation unless the student’s parent conveys the student to a pre-existing charter bus stop and a seat is available on the charter bus. Please contact your child’s school if you have questions about this option.
