Pre-Employment Carpentry Program
The Calgary Catholic School District, in partnership with SAIT offers students an opportunity to earn a Pre-Employment Carpentry Certificate in addition to an Alberta High School Diploma upon completion of their Grade 12 year. This is a one-year program (two semesters) offered to Calgary Catholic students.
When is the information session?
When: Tuesday, May 1, 2018
Where: SAIT campus, room CB318, third floor of the Aldred Building
Time: 7-8 p.m.
What is the Pre-Employment Carpentry program?
Students will attend SAIT to complete their first period of technical training in the Pre-Employment Carpentry Program. The program involves comprehensive safety training, exposure to drafting and blueprint reading and covers all first-year carpentry apprenticeship Individual Learning Modules (ILMs).
Who may enroll in this one-year program?
Students in Grade 11 or 12 who are applying for this program must have HCS3000 Workplace Safety Systems and complete the following high school courses before completing the Pre-Employment Carpentry program:
- Math 10C or 10-3
- ELA 10-1 or 10-2
Note: A maximum of 16 students will be accepted each year in collaboration with CBE.
How do students earn a Pre-Employment Carpentry Certificate while in high school?Students complete their High School Diploma requirements using SAIT Carpentry courses as CTS Credits. This program has been designed to fulfill requirements of Alberta Education, Alberta Apprenticeship & Industry Training, and the Pre-Employment Carpentry Program.
Are there any special program requirements?
Participants must be 15 years of age upon beginning the program. Students must understand this program is a two-semester commitment and that attendance is a high priority in this program. Interested students are eligible to challenge the Alberta Apprenticeship exam for first-year Carpenter Apprenticeship at the completion of the program.
Who will teach the courses?
SAIT instructors will deliver the program at the SAIT campus. Students will be supervised by a Calgary Catholic off-campus teacher.
When will the program take place?
The program is delivered at SAIT Main Campus four days a week, Monday to Thursday, from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
How do students get to SAIT?
Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from SAIT. LRT access takes students right onto campus. Parking is also available at a cost to the student.
Is there a cost to the program?
The tuition for this program is free to all students who are enrolled in a Calgary Catholic high school. Cost of the program after high school is $4,450. Students are responsible for the purchase of Individual Learning Modules (ILM’s) and for purchasing their own personal protective equipment.
How to applyWhat are the advantages of enrolling in this program?
Students can apply at their high school through the career practitioner or off-campus teacher.
Successful graduates of the program will earn:
- 15 high school credits
- A SAIT Certificate of Completion in Pre-Employment Carpentry
- Eligibility to challenge the Alberta Industry Training exam for first-year Carpenter Apprentice.
