The Calgary Catholic School District, in partnership with SAIT Polytechnic, offers students an opportunity to earn a Pre-Employment Electrician Certificate in addition to an Alberta High School Diploma upon completion of their Grade 12 year. This is a one-year program (two semesters) offered to district students.

What is the Pre-Employment Electrician Program?
Students will attend SAIT to complete their first period of technical training in the Pre-Employment Electrician Program. The program involves comprehensive coverage of electrical codes and theory, along with basic wiring and safety and covers all first-year Electrician Apprenticeship Individual Learning Modules (ILMs). This program prepares students to find work with an employer to begin work as an Electrician Apprentice.
What does an electrician do?Who may enroll in this one-year program?
Electricians install and maintain all of the electrical and power systems for our homes, businesses, and factories. They install and maintain the wiring and control equipment through which electricity flows. They also install and maintain electrical equipment and machines in factories and a wide range of other businesses.
Students in Grade 11 or 12 who are applying for this program must have HCS3000 Workplace Safety Systems and complete the following high school courses before completing the Pre-Employment Electrician Program:
- Math 10C or 10-3
- ELAs 10-1 or 10-2
- Science 10
Note: A maximum of two CCSD students will be accepted into this program in collaboration with CBE.
How do students earn a SAIT Pre-Employment Electrician Certificate while in high school?
Students complete their High School Diploma requirements using SAIT Electrician courses as CTS Credits. This program has been designed to fulfill requirements of Alberta Education, Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training, and the SAIT Pre-Employment Electrician Program.
Who will teach the courses?
SAIT instructors will deliver the program at the SAIT Campus and will be supervised by a Calgary Catholic off-campus teacher.
When will the program take place?
The program will be delivered at the SAIT Campus four days a week, Monday to Thursday, from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
How do students get to SAIT?
Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from SAIT. LRT access takes students right onto the campus. Parking is available at a cost to the student.
Is there a cost to the program?
The tuition costs of this program is free to all students who are enrolled in a Calgary Catholic high school. Cost of the program after high school is $4,848. Students are responsible for the purchase of Individual Learning Modules (ILMs) and Personal Protective Equipment.
Are there any special program requirements?
Participants must be 15 years of age upon beginning the program. There is no practicum. Students must understand this program is a two-semester commitment and attendance is a high priority. Interested students are eligible to challenge the Alberta Apprenticeship exam for first-year Electrician Apprenticeship at the completion of the program.

Students apply at their high school through the career practitioner or off-campus teacher.
Successful graduates of the program will earn:
- 15 high school credits
- A SAIT Certificate of Completion in the Pre-Employment Electrician Program
- Eligibility to challenge the Alberta Apprenticeship exam for first-year Electrician Apprenticeship
- This dual-credit program prepares students to enter the workforce with their first year of technical training to prepare them for a job as an Apprentice Electrician
Tuition costs for first period technical training and the cost of the AIT exam are covered by the Alberta Government.
