The Calgary Catholic School District, in partnership with SAIT Polytechnic, offers students an opportunity to earn a Dual-Credit Pharmacy Assistant Certificate in addition to an Alberta High School Diploma upon completion of their Grade 12 year. This is a one-year program (two semesters) offered to district students.

When is the information session?
Date: Wednesday, April 25, 2018
Time: 6-7 p.m.
Location: SAIT campus, room NN105 (first floor of the Burns building)

Who may enroll in this two-year program?
Students in Grade 10 who are applying for this program must have or be currently enrolled in HCS3000 Workplace Safety Systems and complete the following high school courses before completing the Pharmacy Assistant Program:
  • Biology 20 in first semester of Grade 11
  • Biology 30 in first semester of Grade 12
  • An understand that this program is a one-year commitment
  • An average of 60 per cent or higher in Math 30-1 or 30-2 by end of Grade 12
  • Have an average of 60 per cent or higher in ELA 30-1 or 30-2 by end of Grade 12

Note: A maximum of 24 students are accepted in this dual-credit program.

How do students earn a Dual-Credit Pharmacy Assistant Certificate while in high school?
Students complete their high school diploma requirements using SAIT pharmacy assistant courses as options. The program has been designed to fulfill requirements of both Alberta Education and the SAIT Dual-Credit Pharmacy Assistant program.

Are there any special program requirements?
Yes. There is a work experience component in a pharmacy setting, which will be scheduled to occur during the summer following the Grade 12 year. This is a 160-hour unpaid practicum during July and August.

Who will teach the courses?
SAIT instructors will deliver the program and students will be supervised by a Calgary Catholic off-campus teacher.

When will the program take place?
Students will attend SAIT four days a week, Tuesday to Friday mornings from 8:30– 11:30 am. Students must be able to attend all scheduled Friday morning classes regardless of if it is a non-instructional day at their high school. There may be the need to attend an occasional Monday morning class, but the instructor’s will provide that information in advance to students

How do students get to SAIT?
Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from SAIT. LRT access takes students right onto campus. Parking is also available at a cost to the student.

Is there a cost to the program?
This program is free to all students who are enrolled in a Calgary Catholic high school. Students are responsible for the purchase of textbooks.

What are the advantages of enrolling in this program?
Successful students may begin working as a Pharmacy Assistant immediately following completion of high school and their summer practicum without any further post-secondary training or experience in this field.
