Learning a second language greatly contributes to a student’s educational experiences, personal growth and development of higher-level thinking skills. It can expand career opportunities and develop skills that prepare them for the world of work.

All second language programs in the Calgary Catholic School District follow the Alberta Education Programs of Study, with a particular emphasis on the Communicative Approach to language learning that focuses on having students use the target language in authentic learning experiences. In delivering its second language programs, the district recognizes that the target language, whether French, Spanish, Filipino or Italian, is not the prevalent language of the student’s home and community. As a result, instructional strategies and materials are designed for students who do not speak the language at home or in the community.
