Since 1971, Bishop Carroll High School has been offering students in Calgary and the surrounding area a self-directed personalized program of studies.

What sets Bishop Carroll apart from other high schools is its unique self-directed learning environment, which puts students in the driver’s seat of their educational journey. Here, students have the freedom to customize a learning program that they feel is best suited for their unique goals, abilities and interests. With the guidance of a teacher-advisor and their parents, the student will choose the program and courses they want to follow. Students can then progress through these courses at a personalized rate reflecting their individual needs and learning pace.

Although students study at their own pace, they must still follow the curriculum set out by Alberta Education and must fulfill the requirements mandated by the province to receive their Alberta High School Diploma.

The main advantage of self-directed learning is that it empowers the student to take more responsibility and interest in decisions that will affect their education. Students will graduate from Bishop Carroll feeling a unique sense of ownership in their diploma and having had “hands-on” control of their learning.

While Bishop Carroll provides freedom and flexibility to its students, this does not mean that they go through their education without guidance or support. They have a strong and effective teacher-advisory system in place to help students succeed.

Each new student is assigned to a teacher-advisor who will continue to guide, motivate and advise the student until graduation. Learning goals are then accomplished with the continuous support and guidance from their teacher-advisor who is in constant contact in regards to all subjects in order to monitor the student’s progress throughout their high school career. Individual help is always available to students and additional levels of staff allow teachers to spend more quality time assisting students.

A Bishop Carroll student is not only given the freedom to choose but learns the responsibility that accompanies such freedom. This is a valuable skill that enters into their lives both in post-secondary institutions and the world of work.

In addition to academics, Bishop Carroll High School offers a full program for its students. Bishop Carroll boasts facilities and programs that are second to none: a state-of-the art music facility, a refurbished visual arts lab, a graphics lab that is technologically up-to-date, a networked computer and word processing lab, a modern language resource center that offers French, Japanese, Spanish, and Latin, a fully-equipped fitness facility, one of the brightest and biggest high school gymnasiums in the city and a 250 seat theater to host main-stage drama productions.
