The Single Gender program is offered at Sacred Heart, a kindergarten to Grade 6 elementary school, located in the community of Sunalta.

The program allows both boys and girls to attend school in the same building, but divided into different classrooms for the majority of the school day. Students have the opportunity to socialize with each other during recess, lunch hour, intramurals, choir and other extracurricular activities, and participate in liturgical celebrations as a whole school activity.

Research indicates that learning about gender differences can assist teachers in meeting the diverse learning needs of students. There is a recognition that boys typically have a higher physical activity level than girls, while girls often show stronger verbal skills than boys. In identifying that differences do exist, learning opportunities can be structured to support the learner.
