Year-Round Education (YRE) is a school year calendar formatted to more closely match the continuous learning patterns of children. The school year is balanced into four equal terms with students getting a shortened summer vacation and going back to school in August, a two-week holiday in October and an extra week of holidays at both Christmas and Easter.

Most schools offering the year-round education option are dual track schools. Dual track means that the school offers a year-round calendar as well as a traditional calendar. Students who live inside the school’s boundary may choose between year-round or traditional education. Out-of-boundary students may be admitted if there is space in the school.

With the year-round education track, children receive the same education as those on the traditional track. Alberta Education mandates that all students must receive the same curriculum and equal instructional time. In fact, for the majority of the school year, YRE track students and traditional track students study together in the same classes. A multidisciplinary approach to the core subjects, a variety of engaging programs and a special timetable allow for both tracks of students to learn, achieve and grow together.

In determining whether or not year-round education is the best choice for your child, consider the following questions:
  • Are you worried about your child losing interest?
  • Is your child forgetting some of their academic skills over the summer months?
  • Is your child bored and ready to go back to school in August?
  • Would you like family time and holidays during non-peak holiday seasons?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then choosing the year-round calendar track might best meet the needs of your family. Keep in mind that after you have enrolled your child in the year-round calendar track, we require the student to stay on this track until the end of the school year (June) since staffing is linked to the number of students in each class.
