The Calgary Catholic School District's Indigenous Education team focuses on supporting Indigenous students as they balance maintaining a strong link to their culture and heritage with learning the skills necessary to live successfully in today’s society.

The district works collaboratively with Alberta Education and the Indigenous community to support the success of students. Indigenous home and school liaison workers facilitate effective communication between the home and the school community, assist school personnel and encourage active parental involvement in their child’s education.

The Indigenous team works as part of the larger Diverse Learner team and with the Teaching & Learning team to support the Indigenous population in Calgary Catholic Schools. The role of the Diverse Learning team is to provide a wide range of supports to schools to assist the schools in providing programming for students with diverse learning needs. Support may include consultation, specialized assessment, learner support plan development, special education class placement or access to health-related services, including the Regional Collaborative Service Delivery (RCSD). The district provides programming for students with diverse learning needs according to the Alberta Education Standards for Special Education document.

The Indigenous team directs its focus specifically on the needs of the Indigenous student population as well as promotes an appreciation for the diversity among Aboriginal cultures in our schools. The Indigenous Education team engage students both academically and socially to increase class attendance, support student resiliency, and provide curricular support leading to high school completion. In addition the team provides various services, including:

  • Delivery of a cultural component in the context of instructional programs
