Kindergarten

All of our elementary schools offer a half-day kindergarten program. Please contact the school in your attendance area to register.

Registration Requirements

  • In Alberta, kindergarten is optional. Different kindergarten start options depend on a child’s age and birthdate.
    • A child who is 3 years old on September 1 may not start kindergarten that school year (irrespective of the child’s birthdate).
    • A child who is 4 years old on September 1 and will turn 5 years old after December 31 of that school year may not start kindergarten that school year.
    • A child who is 4 years old on September 1 and will turn 5 years old on or before December 31 of that school year may start kindergarten that school year.
    • A child who is 5 years old on September 1 may start kindergarten that school year (irrespective of the child’s birthdate).
    • A child who is 6 years old on September 1 may not start kindergarten that school year (even if the child has never attended kindergarten).
  • A child can attend kindergarten only once (even if the child could otherwise start kindergarten a second time because of the child’s age and birthdate). We must approve a specific exemption for a child to attend kindergarten more than once or to start kindergarten at an age outside the age limits described above.
  • Contact the school in your attendance area to register. The school will require you to provide a copy of your child’s birth certificate and proof of your address. The school will also request you to provide a copy of your child’s or your Catholic baptismal certificate if applicable.
  • Parents of Catholic students who live inside a school’s attendance area and are already enrolled in kindergarten do not need to re-register their students for Grade 1 in the same school. Parents of non-Catholic students and students who live outside a school’s attendance area may need to re-register their students for Grade 1 because we cannot guarantee kindergarten to Grade 1 advancement in the same school for non-Catholic students and students who live outside the school’s attendance area.
