CTF Registration

Registration for CTF courses will open at the end of the school day on Tuesday, February 18, 2020. Registration will remain open until the end of the school day on Friday, February 21, 2020. Course descriptions are found below.

CTF - Career and Technology Foundations

Trimester 3 of CTF for Grades 7-9 will begin in March, and registration for these courses will take place during the week of February 18-21, 2020. Links to the registration forms are posted beneath the course descriptors for each section and will open on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at the end of the school day. CTF 7/8 Course Descriptors:

CTF Business: Financial Management

Two financial management challenges await you in this CTF course:

  1. Compete against teams of Junior and Senior High students across Canada in the Junior Achievement Investment Strategies Program. You will receive $100 000 (virtual) to invest in the stock market and prizes are available for the winning team.
  1. Compete against your classmates to budget your virtual adult life. How can you pay your bills and have the lifestyle you want after paying your income taxes, property taxes, CPP, EI, and all those other things that are listed on your pay stub?

Grade 8 students who competed in Financial Management in Grade 7 a welcome to repeat this challenge, with the understanding that some materials will be repeated from last year.

A Picture's Worth 1000 Words

In this CTF, we will be helping our kindergarten students solve problems…through picture books! You will tasked with helping a student find a solution to their problem, creating a picture book about the solution, and in the end gifting it to your kindergarten partner. You will be designing, problem solving, writing, and drawing for this class. Come ready with all your excitement and creativity!

Indigenous Fine Arts Inspiration

Students will study various Indigenous art forms (music, dance, art, poetry), learn about the artists, the significance, the protocols, and then will create a composition that represents their life and relationship to what was taught. You will not be copying existing art, but will draw inspiration from what you learned and apply it to creating your own fine arts piece (literary, musical, artistic). Possibilities include creating a musical arrangement, a work of art (2D or 3D), or a written piece of poetry.

Learn to Crochet!

If you know how to crochet or want to learn, this is the course for you! Using YouTube video tutorials, how-to websites, and working with other students, you will learn beginner crochet skills, such as chain, single, and double crochet stitches and then use these skills to complete simple crochet projects (such as dishcloths or scarves). Some students may work on a more complicated project of their choice, depending on crochet experience. Ms. Molloy will provide you with a 5.0mm crochet hook. You will be responsible for providing your own yarn (worsted-weight), which may cost you about $10-15 in total for the whole course. If you sign up for this course, you will need to see Ms. Molloy before the first class for more details about which types of yarn you’ll need.

Design and Create Your Own Instrument

Have you ever wondered how instruments make their sounds? Do you have a passion for creation and design? Are you interested in why certain instruments sound high and some sound low? Do you wish to create your own sounds of current and new instruments? Then this CTF is for you! In this CTF, you will study the many ways we can create music and how instruments are designed. You will learn how to reuse obscure materials into a beautiful new instrument which you will test for your class and retest until it sounds just the way you want it to sound!

Come prepared to bring some old recycled materials to turn into an instrument! Be prepared to design multiple wind instruments, percussion instruments and string instruments. Bring materials from home! There will be certain requirements of each. Have fun and get creative! Make your instrument sound amazing!

Advanced Knitting

Have you ever wanted to console someone, especially someone who is experiencing grief or personal turmoil? Well, this is your chance to help bring comfort to your neighbor by doing a corporal work of mercy, comfort the sick.

In this CTF option, students will craft beautiful prayer shawls, which will be blessed at a Holy Mass. The shawls will be given out to bring comfort and prayer support to those experiencing illness, loss, loneliness, or depression in our parish community. Students will need to be proficient with the knit stitch as they will be building on their basic knitting skills by creating a shawl which will require counting stitches and following a pattern.

This is an Intermediate Level knitting class. Students are required to have successfully completed the Knitting for Need scarf project in order to register for this class or demonstrate proficiency in knitting. All shawls will be donated to Ascension of Our Lord Parish, where they will be blessed and shared, along with Prayer Cards, with those in our parish community. Knitting is a craft that develops hand-eye coordination, concentration and a useful, beautiful product.

Students will meet CTF requirements under the Cluster: Communication: Media Design Communication (MDC) Arts: Fashion Studies (FAS): textile products and arts..

Model United Nations

How do countries work together to resolve international conflicts? Or tackle international problems like poverty and hunger? Or respond to a global epidemic? In Model United Nations, students will learn about the perspectives of countries around the world and participate in simulations which challenge them to consider different approaches to foreign policy as representatives from a variety of countries. Students will be able to develop skills in debate, research, and most importantly communication and collaboration as they learn more about the world around them.

CTF Typing Challenge

In CTF Typing Challenge you will gain valuable skills for your future schooling and career. Throughout this course, you will learn how to properly use a QWERTY keyboard with ease, without looking at your fingers, and in a way that will make your typing more efficient. You will save countless hours and will find yourself completing assignments in a more timely fashion. Typing skills are a must for a future career that requires any type of computer work.

Event planning: Grade 9 Retreat, Farewell Mass

Do you like to plan school events? Would you like to plan some of the biggest events our school puts on? We are planning the Grade 9 Retreat and Farewell Mass and we need you to come out to make them the best yet!

Please sign up for this CTF if you are interested in preparing and rehearsing the music, the decorations, the slideshows to show the grade nine students and parents, speeches and reflections that will be prepared, food preparation and clean up, and anything else we can add to make this farewell special for our grade 9 students. CTF : Core Yoga - open to females

The practice of yoga brings about emotional stability and clarity of mind while making the body stronger.

Students will be encouraged to plan and lead their own yoga sequence, and become confident leaders and using the voice to convey movement to others. The skills learned in yoga can translate to real life. Students will become self- aware, strengthened the core area and will move with a goal to inspire to live a healthy lifestyle. We will address body image, meal plan, mindfulness, mediation, self-confidence and self-respect.

Students are required to bring a mat and small towel.

This course is for students that would like additional support to achieve in academics.

Robotics

This CTF option uses the Lego EV3 platform.The students will learn creative problem-solving skills that will enable them to become critical thinkers and creators of the future. They will construct various robots and program them to meet a number of challenges.The challenges presented to the students are both engaging and fun.

What: Speech and Debate – Like to get your voice heard? Like to be right all the time? Want to gain confidence? Then speech and debate is for you! Why do leaders get elected? Why do people vote for one candidate over another? It’s because leaders have their voices heard and will convince you that their way is the right way.

In this CTF module, you will be watching some of the most memorable speeches of all time. You will be able to practice your improvisational skills with heart-pounding, spur of the moment speeches. You will use your word-manipulation skills to convince people that you are right! {Caution: you may also want to use these skills with your family and friends!}

Why: Career uses/opportunities – political-science careers, government careers, heads of companies opportunities, human-rights activists, community or charitable organizations chairpersons, teachers, lawyers, justice careers.

Digital design and photography

Students will explore how to arrange, distribute, align and compile photos and text to create layouts that are functional and effective. Time will be spent learning essential elements of photography and using these photographs in digital designs. These designs may include putting together elements of the school’s yearbook.

Model United Nations
