CTF - Career and Technology Foundations

Trimester Two of CTF for Grades 7 - 9 will begin in December, and registration for these courses will take place during the week of November 25-29, 2019. CTF 7/8 Course Descriptors:

Recreational Leadership: Meditation and Mindfulness

In Recreational Leadership, you will experiment with guided meditation, colouring mandalas and the use of scripture in prayer and meditation. You will learn how to pay attention to your breath and to notice when your mind wanders, learning how to remain in the present moment. Finally, you will lead the class through your own personally created guided meditation. The goals of this class are to improve your leadership skills, self-awareness, relaxation skills, stress levels, anxiety coping, emotional stability, focus, clarity of mind and self-compassion.

Design and Create Your Own Instrument

Have you ever wondered how instruments make their sounds? Do you have a passion for creation and design? Are you interested in why certain instruments sound high and some sound low? Do you wish to create your own sounds of current and new instruments? Then this CTF is for you! In this CTF, you will study the many ways we can create music and how instruments are designed. You will learn how to reuse obscure materials into a beautiful new instrument which you will test for your class and retest until it sounds just the way you want it to sound!

Come prepared to bring some old recycled materials to turn into an instrument! Be prepared to design multiple wind instruments, percussion instruments and string instruments. Bring materials from home! There will be certain requirements of each. Have fun and get creative! Make your instrument sound amazing!

School Wellness – How can we make Ascension a better place?

Do you want to feel like your voice is heard? Do you want to feel like your teachers and parents really understand you? Do you have all these great ideas about how we can make our school a better place? This CTF is STUDENT-CENTERED--- that means YOU, YOUR VOICE. We are going to explore the issues students feel exist within our school community. We will look at: what are the things students feel are working and how we can incorporate that into the school more! What are the things that aren’t working and what kind of solutions can we find! We spend lots of time at school and we want to make it an enjoyable place to be!

Service Project: Knitting for Need

Have you ever wanted to help someone in need, especially someone lacking the basic necessities of life? Well, this is your chance to serve your neighbor by doing a corporal work of mercy, clothing the naked. Clothing provides two basic human needs: protection and dignity.

In this CTF option, students will learn the basics of knitting to make a scarf for the homeless community of Calgary. Scarfs will be donated to The Calgary Drop-In Centre at the end of the option, to help those in need stay warm throughout Calgary’s cold winter months. Knitting is a craft that develops hand-eye coordination, concentration and a beautiful useful product in the end. Students will practice how to knit different stitches depending on their skill level to complete their projects.

Students will meet CTF requirements under the Cluster: Communication: Media Design Communication (MDC) Arts: Fashion Studies (FAS): textile products and arts.

Cosmetology CTF: Hair Styling and Braiding

Are you interested in learning and experimenting with different ways of braiding or styling hair? If yes, this is the CTF for you! Through student collaboration, looking at photos, and watching tutorial videos, students will learn and practice different hair styles on themselves and their classmates. Students will also be challenged to demonstrate the skills they have learned and create a tutorial to teach others in the class. Please note, if you sign up for this course, you are agreeing to come to class with all of the necessary tools that supplies that you will need (including brushes, combs, hair elastics, bobby-pins, etc).

A Picture’s Worth 1,000 Words

In this CTF, we will be helping our kindergarten students solve problems…through picture books! You will tasked with helping a student find a solution to their problem, creating a picture book about the solution, and in the end gifting it to your kindergarten partner. You will be designing, problem solving, writing, and drawing for this class. Come ready with all your excitement and creativity!

Sports Medicine

Students will about injury prevention and management in this CTF option. This course will cover basic anatomy, how to prevent injuries that can occur in everyday sports and recreation activities, and how to treat minor injuries such as sprains and strains. Students will learn how they can apply sports medicine skills to prevent and manage injuries for themselves, teammates, and as athletic trainers.

This Ad Was Made For You

Are you interested in running your own business one day? Do you see company logos and wonder why some are effective and others are not? In this CTF, you will assume the role of an investigative journalist and investigate the role of advertising in our lives. You will identify characteristics of successful (and unsuccessful) advertisements and consider the marketing strategies used. Based on what you discover, you will then analyze various logos, redesign ones you feel are ineffective, and then design an original logo.

CTF 8/9 Course Descriptors:

CTF : Core Yoga - open to females

The practice of yoga brings about emotional stability and clarity of mind while making the body stronger.

Students will be encouraged to plan and lead their own yoga sequence, and become confident leaders and using the voice to convey movement to others. The skills learned in yoga can translate to real life. Students will become self- aware, strengthened the core area and will move with a goal to inspire to live a healthy lifestyle. We will address body image, meal plan, mindfulness, mediation, self-confidence and self-respect.

Students are required to bring a mat and small towel.

Robotics

CTF Typing Challenge

In CTF Typing Challenge you will gain valuable skills for your future schooling and career. Throughout this course, you will learn how to properly use a QWERTY keyboard with ease, without looking at your fingers, and in a way that will make your typing more efficient. You will save countless hours and will find yourself completing assignments in a more timely fashion. Typing skills are a must for a future career that requires any type of computer work.

Religion Through Disney

Sometimes, Religious concepts can be difficult to understand when reading them in a text book. When you see the virtues, blessings, teachings and “rules” demonstrated in real life – or in this CTF course in movies – then we can understand how they are applicable to our own lives. In this CTF module, we will be watching several animated Disney movies (e.g., The Lion King) and discussing various aspects of our Catholic beliefs and “rules” together. (Limit of 26 students) If you have previously taken this option, please do not sign up for it this time.

If you are interested in learning about and experimenting with applying makeup, manicuring nails, and styling hair, this is the CTF for you! Through student collaboration, looking at photos, and watching video tutorials, students will learn about and practice with different hair styles as well as experiment with makeup and nail polish application techniques for different purposes. Students will learn about safety and hygiene while working with different products. There will also be an opportunity for interested students to work with makeup with characters of the school play in mind. Please note, students that sign up for this course will be responsible for bringing their own supplies (hair tools/accessories, make up, and nail polish). Please discuss this CTF with your parents and make sure they are okay with you participating in this course.

Digital design and photography

Students will explore how to arrange, distribute, align and compile photos and text to create layouts that are functional and effective. Time will be spent learning essential elements of photography and using these photographs in digital designs. These designs may include putting together elements of the school’s yearbook.

In this CTF, we will be helping our kindergarten students solve problems…through picture books!
