ES 1 Puts Faith into Action

Best Buddies of Canada

This program is predicated on the belief that challenges are gifts which inspire unconditional acceptance. Best Buddies pairs up mainstream students with students who have an intellectual disabilities. This program provides the mainstream student a leadership opportunity while the student with the intellectual disability is given an opportunity to enjoy the same experiences most people take for granted – “chilling” with a group at lunch, watching TV, or simply enjoying the company of a friend.

St. Vincent de Paul

Each week the ES 1 students go to St. Gerard Church and pack 11-15 food hampers for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The students restock the shelves and take a leadership role in food drives.

Sociables for Seniors

Another weekly program involves the ES 1 students going to the Mayfair and Inter-care Nursing Homes. During these visits, they play games, complete crafts, and even offer hand massages to the residents.

Volunteer Club

The Volunteer Club meets once a month to look at possible projects the students can undertake in groups of 5 or more. They have set up and provided baked goods for Inn From the Cold. Thanksgiving and Christmas food hampers have been collected and delivered for St. Vincent de Paul and a women’s shelter. Clothing drives have often been a focus, particularly a drive for teen clothing. Students participate in the Grad Promise Banner campaign each year. One of our sister schools has been a recipient of our students’ generosity. They have sold tuques for the homeless, and participated in many other worthwhile causes.
