Bishop Grandin Water Project

The Bishop Grandin Water Project is a global justice and environmental group dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support clean drinking water for all. This club has been active in both our school and local community for the past eight years. The club meets once a week and works on projects throughout the school year. It is never too late to join.

Clean Water for All

1.1 billion people in the world lack access to clean drinking water. “You may say I’m a Dreamer, but I am not the only one.”

This timeless quote from John Lennon’s “Imagine” provided the philosophical thinking that spurred The Bishop Grandin Water Project Team to commit to the organization of a multitude of events and water awareness educational efforts. We host numerous bake sales and “Christmas-Unplugged” coffee house event in which we unveil the Water Project Legacy painting by Keegan Starlight. Our annual Variety Show and Silent Auction entitled showcases huge talent from students and staff and we welcome Tal Woolsey from CAWST who shows great appreciation for our commitment to fundraising for CAWST and bringing the issue of global clean water access to our school community.

Fundraising – CAWST (The Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology)

The Bishop Grandin Water Project is a group of dedicated students who, under the leadership of the Social Justice Committee teachers, have a common dream. We want to see a world where everybody can have clean drinking water and proper sanitation. In order to work towards this goal, the Bishop Grandin Water Project plans and pursues fundraising and awareness events throughout the year. We organize famous bake sales, awareness events, and have established traditions our school such as our annual semi-unplugged Christmas coffee house. In the past nine years, team members have reached out to our school and church community by presenting at St. Gerard’s during Lent and visiting junior high feeder schools. At the end of each school year, we get together with all of those who support our efforts, to celebrate our accomplishments through our annual Variety show and Silent Auction which showcases the incredible artistic talent at our school.

All of the funds that we raise at Bishop Grandin are sent to a Calgary non-profit known as CAWST (The Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology). CAWST puts the money which we raise toward global initiatives to provide training and technology to communities, which can then provide clean water and required sanitation. In the past nine years, we have, together with the community and the school body, raised over $110,000.00. This past September, we received an award of recognition from CAWST for our contribution. As a group, we are all looking forward to what will come with this year of raising funds and awareness! In November, we look forward to the annual Youth Wavemakers Summit – put on by CAWST, one of the many amazing experiences that comes with commitment to the Water Project. Here we will plan our year of action.

The Bishop Grandin Water Project is always welcoming new members and support from individuals and organizations. We thank all of those who have been generous over the years. We have our minds set forward to the year ahead and are excited to continue changing the world, one drop of water at a time!
