The aim of the Physical Education program at Father James Whelihan is to enable individuals to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. We hope that through our Physical Education program we can enable children to achieve their individual potential, creating a positive future for themselves, as well as enhance their quality of life. Physical activity is vital to all aspects of normal growth and development, and the benefits are widely recognized. It is our hope that our Physical Education program can be a facilitator in providing opportunities for the development of the desire for lifelong participation in sports and/or physical activity. Students will be expected to participate in all Physical Education classes, unless a doctor note is provided, or participation is deemed unsafe by a teacher.

Goals and Objectives:

ACTIVITY – Students will develop skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities. These skills include locomotor, nonlocomotor, and manipulative.

BENEFITS for HEALTH – Students will understand, experience and appreciate the health benefits that result from physical activity.

COOPERATION – Students will learn to interact positively with others. Positive interactions include communication, fair play, leadership and teamwork.

DO IT DAILY… – Students will assume responsibility to lead an active way of life. These responsibilities include effort, safety, goal setting, dealing with personal challenge and active living in their community.
