The International Languages Department at Notre Dame offers 3-year Language and Culture programs in French, Spanish and Italian. Grade twelve language courses may be used for university entrance requirements.

French

French 10 – 3Y: (5 credits) Prerequisite: None This is an introductory first year program for those students who have studied the basic concepts of French at the elementary and/or junior high level. Students will learn to communicate in French within a limited context of everyday life and on a concrete level.

French 20 – 3Y: (5 credits) Prerequisite: French 10 or approved challenge A continuation of the French 10 3Y program based on the skills already acquired in French 10. This level continues to reinforce student speech and comprehension with greater emphasis on writing and reading skills.

French 30 – 3Y: (5 credits) Prerequisite: French 20 or approved challenge This course continues to reinforce the skills of comprehension and speech and increases the dimensions of reading and writing. The knowledge of the fundamentals of French grammar and the familiarity with French culture is a continued focus of the program.

Spanish

Spanish 10 – 3Y: (5 credits) Prerequisite: None This is an introductory course available to all students with very limited or no knowledge of the Spanish language. This course is not designed for students who speak, write and understand the Spanish language. In this course you will acquire basic communication skills in Spanish and you will develop basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. This course focuses its fields of experience on greetings, and personal information, describing people, school, activities, family, professions/occupations, basic geography of Spanish speaking countries and intercultural elements.

Spanish 20-3Y: (5 credits) Prerequisite: Spanish 10 or approved challengeThis course is available to all students who have obtained a passing grade in Spanish 10 or those with limited knowledge of the Spanish language. This course is not designed for students who can write and speak the Spanish language with significant proficiency or who are bilingual in Spanish. In this course you will acquire intermediate communication skills in Spanish and you will develop intermediate listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. This course focuses its fields of experience on foods, restaurants, markets, shopping, fashion, sports and exercise, social life, health and safety (physical states/visit to the doctor), daily routine, vacations and travel.

Spanish 30 – 3Y: (5 credits) Prerequisite: Spanish 20 or approved challenge This course is available to all students who have obtained a passing grade in Spanish 20 or those with intermediate knowledge of the Spanish language. In this course you will acquire advanced communication skills in Spanish and you will develop intermediate listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. This course is not recommended for students who are bilingual in Spanish and who can understand, write and speak the Spanish language with significant proficiency. This course focuses its fields of experience on the following areas: arts, entertainment, literature, music, relationships, celebrations (cultural), folk tales, legends, fables, technology, the world of work, and the environment

Italian

Italian 10-3Y: (5 credits) Prerequisite: None Students will learn basic expressions and apply basic communication skills in different contexts. Additionally, students will learn about various aspects of the Italian culture.

Italian 20-3Y: (5 credits) Prerequisite: Italian 10 or approved challenge Students will continue their progress in Italian language both with their oral and written skills. Additionally, students will work in a variety of projects about different aspects of the Italian culture. Pre-requisite: Italian 10-3Y (5 credits)

Italian 30-3Y: (5 credits) Prerequisite: Italian 20 or approved challenge Students will continue to use the oral and written language learning strategies developed in Italian 10 and 20 to improve oral and written productions. Students will be able to research and interpret in oral and written texts the contributions and influences of various Italian regional cultures on our contemporary society and on the world.
