Guideline Statements for Notre Dame’s Ministry Program

  • The intent of the ministry hours is to provide service to a registered society, foundation or non-profit organization that impacts social justice.
  • Ministry hours may not be obtained from family members/relatives, neighbours or friends.
  • Special circumstances can be discussed with the school principal for consideration and approval.
  • Ministry hours may not be received from places of work even if you are not paid. This includes your own place of work, your friend’s places of work or your family’s business.
  • Ministry hours may not be obtained at any type of fund raising event for athletic teams and clubs or with dance or martial art studios.


Acceptable Community Hours would include:

  • Calgary Public Library – Reading Buddies, Computer Buddies
  • Humane Society, Pets For Life Foundation
  • Elementary School functions
  • Children’s Festival
  • Hospitals or Senior’s Facilities
  • Leaders for Cubs/Scouts/Guides
  • Coaching/assisting community sports teams
  • Charity Runs as a participant or a volunteer
  • Homeless shelters, Feed the Hungry, Inn From The Cold
  • Organized community clean up events
  • Youth Leadership group activities – i.e. – Youth Volunteer Corps
  • Church events – lectors, greeters, children’s liturgy


Acceptable School Hours would include:

  • Score keeping/timekeeping, lines-person for school teams
  • Hosts/greeters for athletic events/tournaments
  • Ushers/ticket sellers for drama events
  • Classroom assistance - bulletin boards, clean up, peer tutoring
  • Library and textbook assistance
  • Art/Drama committees
  • School liturgies and celebrations
  • Yearbook, SLAC, SAC, PAWS committee member


Unacceptable Hours:

  • Assisting with moving, painting, yard work or home construction
  • Babysitting, child-care, house sitting, pet sitting
  • Volunteering for sports teams fundraisers or selling promotional items
  • Volunteer teaching at martial arts studios or dance studios
  • Working for free at any company that is not a registered charity
