Art Education

Art Education if founded on the philosophy that artistic endeavours are a serious and worthwhile pursuit. This program challenges students by emphasizing current and historical thinking about art forms and the world of art. Great attention is given to presenting art works as cultural products; therefore, students must be aware of how their images are shaped by history and changing aesthetics.

Dramatic Study

At St. Alphonsus Fine Arts School it is our mandate to ensure that students are exposed to many different elements of the fine arts. The focus for our drama program is to create a safe and supportive space. Students are encouraged to explore different forms of behaviours through movement, speech, acting and improvisation. We allow students to investigate and develop their technical skills and have the opportunity to study the history of the theatre.

It is our priority to make sure that students have the opportunities to view various types of plays whether at a high school level, school presentations or large professional companies. It is our expectation that students be exposed to professionals and experts in different areas of dramatic study, whether through in-house workshops or off-campus field trips.

Band

The St. Alphonsus Band Program consists of two ensembles: the Grade 7 Concert Band and the Grade 8 & 9 Concert Band. Our program is made up of many talented young musicians, and throughout the year, the students have opportunity to play at venues and for audiences of all kinds.

Comprised of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion instruments, the St. Alphonsus Concert Bands perform regularly at the:
– St. Cecilia Day Festival at St. Mary’s High School
– St. Alphonsus Christmas Prelude
– Calgary Music Festival
– St. Alphonsus Liturgies
– Community Mass
– St. Alphonsus Year-End Fine Arts Extravaganza at the Rosza Centre, UofC

Other opportunities include our:
– Spring Band Camps for Grade 7 and 8 and 9 students
– Working with professional clinicians from the community
– working with guest conductors from in and around Calgary

Come share the music with us! We would love to have you in our audience at the next performance!

Italian

Calgary Catholic's Italian Language and Culture program offers students the opportunity to study Italian in addition to their regular program of study. Students develop Italian language and communication skills and participate in various cultural activities. Previous Italian experience is not required and parents do not need to know the language. Instructional strategies and materials are designed for non-Italian speaking students. The program provides authentic learning experiences through the celebration of cultural activities, traditions and events. Students are able to gain an increased understanding, appreciation and respect for cultural diversity.

French

Bonjour tout le monde! The FSL program at St. Alphonsus is one that welcomes students no matter what their level in French. In our French classroom, we emphasize the elements of risk-taking, building confidence, appreciation for French Canadian culture and mutual respect. It is important for all students to learn French should they ever wish to travel or get a great paying job - there are a lot of real life benefits to knowing this great language. At St. Alphonsus, we will integrate the Fine Arts of Drama, Art and Music to make learning the French language a positive and unique experience.
Bienvenue!
