What is Fresh Start?
- Fresh Start is an opportunity for students who need an alternative to the traditional high school to re-engage with their learning in a supportive and encouraging environment.
- Fresh Start provides assistance for high school students up to 19 years who are at risk of not completing school due to a variety of factors/behaviors that have affected previous regular school attendance.Fresh Start provides a small classroom setting where students are welcomed to interact with program staff in a welcoming, safe atmosphere. Our staff is committed to nurturing and developing each student’s potential in a caring and supportive environment where students are accepted, encouraged and treated with dignity and respect. A program counselor is on-site and available to assist students on an individual basis.
- Fresh Start has a relaxed atmosphere that encourages the student to build positive relationships with the staff and other students in a secure and non-threatening environment.
- Fresh Start utilizes a less formal, less structured environment than regular schools. There are no classes, teachers do not give formal lessons, and there are no bells. Courses are delivered using Self-Directed Study Modules; On-line Learning options, and in some cases, if the student desires and is ready for; direct instruction in a particular core subject class within the St. Anne Academic Centre. The individualized, flexible and self-paced program at Fresh Start allows students to begin where they left off, and progress at their own rate.
How Does Fresh Start Work?
Fresh Start is primarily a self-directed program where
students engage in learning by working through a series of learning packages
called modules. Students should be able to work independently for the most
part, with the teachers assisting on a one-on-one or small group basis.
Students who enroll in Fresh Start should demonstrate a
willingness to be back in school. They are excited to get their education back
on track and have set some goals for their future. A respectful and positive
attitude is required as well as a commitment to regular attendance and steady
completion of work. Students should possess necessary reading skills, work
habits and maturity to do a self directed style of learning. Students must have
the ability to work well and respectfully with other students in the classroom
and help maintain a positive attitude.
