Our Patron Saint - St. Maria Goretti
Saint Maria Goretti is the patron saint of children.
Born in 1890 to a poor peasant family in Corinaldo, Italy, Maria Goretti from an early age showed particular devotion and faith in God. After her father’s death in 1900, Maria took over many of the household duties so that her mother could support the family as a field labourer. They shared living quarters with the Serenelli family, and many difficulties arose in this arrangement.
On July 5, 1902, as Maria cared for her younger sister, the Serenelli’s 18 year old son, Alessandro, began to harass her, making threats, and when she continued to resist, he stabbed her. From her deathbed, Maria not only forgave her attacker, but promised to pray for him continually in order that his soul be saved. She died the following day.
After eight years in prison, Alessandro Serenelli repented and sincerely begged forgiveness, returned to his Catholic faith and, after his release from prison, spent the rest of his life as a gardener and simple labourer. Alessandro himself testified on Maria’s behalf in the process of her beatification.
St. Maria Gorettiis honoured for her practice of virtue throughout her life, for the forgiveness and love she demonstrated, and for her willingness to stand firm in her beliefs even when threatened with death. Her feast day is July 6th.
Prayer to St. Maria GorettiSt. Maria, pray for us that we may become more like you;
Always wanting to love God, to do what pleases Him,
And to give Him the best of all that we do.
Help us to love and care for our families, as you loved and cared for yours.
Help us to be good friends and to give generously to others, just as you did.
When we are hurt or angry, help us to remember how you forgave.
When we are tempted to do wrong, help us to remember
how you tried always to do right.
And especially, St. Maria, pray that we may always choose to love God
and to see God’s ways as the most important things in life.
We ask this in the name of Jesus, whom you loved so much.

St. Maria Goretti Song
Maria was a young girl,
Loving, pure, and humble.
She cooked and cleaned and worked hard
To help her family.
Chorus:It’s all about knowing and growing,
Living and giving,
Caring and sharing,
That’s where it’s at!
Maria loved dear Jesus,
She followed his commandment
To love and care for others,
Not thinking of herself.
Repeat ChorusMaria’s message to us
Would be to honor Jesus
To love and help each other
At St. Maria School.
