French as a Second Language (FSL)

Learning French as a second language will enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to communicate in a variety of school, travel, leisure and job-related contexts. Being able to use the French language is an important aspect of Canadian life, as well as being a language of daily communication in many other countries.

French 10 (Beginner 2/3 Level)

This course is offered to students with very little or no previous French. At the end of the course students should be able to communicate in French within a limited context of everyday life and on a concrete level: asking for and giving information in connection with school, people around them, weather, animals and holidays and celebrations.

French 20 (Intermediate 4/5 Level)

The students will have the opportunity to improve their ability to communicate. Themes to be covered include the world of work, trips, excursions or student exchanges, money, role of the media, conservation and the environment.

French 30 (Intermediate 5/6 Level)

The students will have the opportunity to improve their ability to communicate. Themes to be covered include the world of work, trips, excursions or student exchanges, money, role of the media, conservation and the environment.

French 31a (Advanced 7 Level)

French 31a is an advanced enriched course for students who wish to maintain and build their language skills for their own interest or as further preparation for the study of French at the university level. Themes to be covered include challenges for my future, health and leisure activities, the francophone world, legends and myths, and the sciences technology.

French 31b (Advanced 8 Level)

French 31b is the second of the advanced enriched courses for students who wish to maintain and build their language skills for their own interest or as further preparation for the study of French at the university level. Students will engage in the following fields of experiences: communications, the future of the world, the arts/plays, adolescents and the law, and characters and personalities.

French 31c (Advanced 9 Level)

French 31c is the final advanced enriched course for students who wish to maintain and build their language skills for their own interest or as further preparation for the study of French at the university level. Students will engage in the following fields of experiences: dealing with government, humour, becoming independent, novels, and social trends and issues.

IB AB Initio French

This course sequence is intended primarily for potential IB students who wish to take the full diploma but who have little or no instruction in French. It is a two year program designed to help students express simple concepts in French; that is, to speak and write with sufficient fluency and without ambiguity. In May of the final year of the program, students will take the IB final examination which is prepared by the IB examination organization.

French 31a Pre IB

Prerequisite: 2 - 5 years of previous learning of French or an 85% or more on the Grade 9 Placement. Test administered by the District. This course covers the IB and the Alberta curriculum. Students will read a play or novel and will write compositions on a variety of topics.

French 31b IB

Prerequisite: French 31a Pre IB

French 31c IB

Prerequisite: French 31b Pre IB. Students take the final oral and written IB exams.
