Junior High Athletics

Intramurals

Students at St. Matthew have the opportunity to participate in a lunch hour intramural athletics program. Intramurals offer recreational opportunities for students, with emphasis on participation rather than competition.

Over the course of the school year, students will compete against each other and teachers in class challenges such as Tug-O-War and Dodgeball, as well as team sports such as Team Handball, Basketball, Floor Hockey, and Soccer. The intramural program is open to all Junior High students wishing to participate.

Intramurals will also be offered to students in grades 3-6. The elementary intramural program will take place during the Monday lunch hour and will include activities similar to those offered at the junior high level.

In addition, Sports Performance students are able to gain volunteer hours while organizing and officiating games, providing service to the school community.

Inter-Scholastic Athletics

St. Matthew School enters teams in the Calgary Catholic Junior High School Athletic Association’s sponsored events. Teams at the senior level include students who demonstrate an interest and ability to compete at a higher level of competition. Eligibility for such teams is dependent on numerous factors, including the ability to maintain a satisfactory record of academic achievement, classroom conduct, cooperation and demonstrating positive contributions to the school community.

St. Matthew also has teams at the junior level. Students in grades seven and eight who wish to develop skills are given an opportunity to do so through these teams. The focus of the junior teams is non-competitive in nature, as skill development is the main priority. As with the senior teams, eligibility for such teams is also dependent on numerous factors, including the ability to maintain a satisfactory record of academic achievement, classroom conduct, co-operation and demonstrating positive contributions to the school community.

Our school currently has teams competing in cross-country running, volleyball, wrestling, basketball, dance works, badminton, flag football and track & field.

We congratulate our Bears teams for being great ambassadors. Way to go Bears.
