We take great pride at St. Matthew School to establish and nurture an environment of commitment and practice to Catholicity among students, staff and parents. We create a learning community which empowers staff and students to problem solve in a creative, critical and flexible manner. We continue to enhance the quality of teaching and learning to promote academic excellence and pride in all our school achievements. Our staff strives to foster effective, open lines of communication while organizing the trifocal partnership between home, school and parish. We continually improve classroom instructional programs through a process of program review, student achievement analysis and teacher supervision and evaluation. We support a positive, collaborative school environment and a clear sense of community.

Core Curriculum

Alberta Education defines a basic education as one which provides students with a solid core program which includes Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. In our Catholic schools, Religious Education is also included in our core program.

Information and Communication Technology is a program included in the core curriculum in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies at all grade levels.

Supplementary Curriculum

The Calgary Catholic School District provides a comprehensive liberal arts approach to teaching and learning in order to prepare students for post-secondary education and the world of work.

In addition to the core curriculum, other subjects are offered at various levels of education (elementary or junior high). Depending on your child’s grade, these may include Career and Technology Studies (Grade 8 & 9), Fine Arts, Physical Education and Health, and many more Option courses at the Junior High level.

Technology:

We strive to use various technologies to further engage our students in the established curriculums. We have a technology teacher in Junior High at our school who supports our teachers and students in learning the various technologies that are most beneficial to teaching and learning such as:

  • Classroom Blogs/EBoard (Elementary electronic communication tool)
  • Brightspace by D2L (Junior High electronic communication tool)
  • Smart Boards
  • LCD projectors and other numerous digital technologies.

With the support of our School Council, various school fundraisers and Government grants, we are blessed to have every classroom at École St. Matthew School equipped with an instructional laptop for every teacher, an LCD projector available for every classroom and a Smart board in every classroom. In addition, we have 2 fully operating computer labs for student use.
