Learning French is as Canadian as hockey and canoes. Today, more than 150,000 students attend French-first language schools outside Quebec, 320,000 are in French-immersion programs, and more than two million Canadian students are enrolled in core French.

As our environments are becoming increasingly multi-cultural, it is beneficial for students to learn a second language. Learning a second language greatly contributes to a student’s educational experiences, personal growth and development of higher level thinking skills.

French Immersion is a form of bilingual education. Students are taught the curriculum mandated by Alberta Education using French as the medium for instruction.

The Early Immersion program currently has an entry point at the Kindergarten or Grade 1 levels only. We ONLY offer French Immersion at the Junior High level at École St. Matthew School. Students will by the end of Grade 9 achieve an English Language Arts level equivalent to that of all-English program students and are also able to achieve equivalent levels of learning in the content of all subjects taken, whether they are instructed in English or in French. This program enables students to become functionally bilingual. At École St. Matthew we provide our students opportunities for students to gain insight into the French heritage and culture of Canada and the common attitudes and values of the French-speaking community.

Proportion Goal of French to English:

  • Grades 7, 8 and 9:
  • 50-57% French; 43-50% English

  • Grades 7, 8 and 9:
  • French Language Arts, Mathematics, Science & Social Studies

Subjects taught in English:
