St. Monica Resumption Plan 2020-2021

The staff of St. Monica would like to welcome you back to school for the 2020-2021 school year.As you have heard on the news on July 21st, the provincial government announced that school districts are to proceed with Scenario 1:in-school classes resume (near normal with health measures) for September 2020.

We understand that many of you have questions about what the return to school looks like for this year. The Calgary Catholic School District is working closely with the Ministry of Education and Alberta Health Services to develop guiding principles and practices for re-entry. For those planning to attend St. Monica School, Calgary Catholic has developed a School Resumption Handbook that our school will be using to guide our safety practices. As well, I have included an attachment that may provide further information and details about some other questions you may have.We understand that this can be a difficult decision, please note that I am available to answer questions by phone or email.

First and foremost, our district has outlined five key safety measures for our return to school plan:

·Health monitoring (Staff & students, with their parents assistance must complete a checklist each day )

·Regular handwashing

·Regular sanitizing

·Wearing masks (students will be provided)

·Physical distancing (where possible)

The administration and staff of St. Monica School understand the importance of teaching students the mandated protocols we have in place and assisting them in understanding and following the new routines. As such, in order to support a smooth start that sets the desired tone for reducing the risk of spread and increased safety for all our students, St. Monica will be using a staggered entry process for ALL students the first week of school (September 2-4). To respect your time and childcare considerations, we will be utilizing our school conference manager for families to sign-up for a staggered entry time on one of the following days.

·Wednesday, Sept 2, Thursday, Sept. 3, Friday, Sept. 4

Availability for each day will have a set limit for each grade to ensure groups are small enough to directly teach safety routines and practices directly related to COVID.We will follow up with an email with instructions on how to utilize conference manager and a link for you to access. We anticipate the link being active on August 25 th at 10:00 am. We will welcome all grade 1-9 students to school on Tuesday, September 8th.

·Kindergarten and preschool students and their parents will attend a short individual session in person or online with their teacher between September 3 rd – September 8 th and an assigned staggered entry with their class from Sept. 9-11th. You will be contacted by your child’s teacher to arrange a date and time.During this appointment your teacher will discuss with you start time and gathering areas for your child. We will welcome all Kindergarten/Preschool students to regular full day classes on Monday, September 14 th.

Staggered Entry:When you arrive at school on your staggered entry day, we ask that you wait in your division’s assigned area and respect the space of others. All staff will be outside to welcome students.Grades 1-3 will meet on the grassy area inside our school fence.Grades 4-6 will meet on the tarmac beside the playground. Junior high students will meet near the basketball hoops. It is our assumption that all students have completed the daily health-check with their parents. Please wear masks and maintain physical distancing as much as possible at that time.

We recognize the importance of creating a cohort of students. We will do our best to support cohorts by implementing some of the following practices:

·Students will remain with their class throughout the day as their primary cohort. JH students will be co-horted by grades.

·For recess and lunch, there will be more than one cohort outside at a time, however, each will have their own area.

·Classrooms will be set up with desks spaced as far apart as possible, and students will wear masks for most of the day.

·Masks will be worn always outside of the classroom when in school. The teacher will make the decision about mask usage in the classroom and students will follow his/her lead.

·Frequent hand washing/sanitizing will occur.

We remind families that Calgary Catholic School District is providing an online learning option for students in Grades 1-12.Please note that this will look quite different though than the delivery of online learning our students were introduced to from March to June 2020.Registration is still open but will close on August 21 at midnight. To begin the registration process for online learning, please visit ccsdinfo.ca/OnlineLearning and if you have questions relating to online learning please contact St. Isidore School (grades 1-9).

As we begin the school year together, we will continue to be guided by the district and Alberta Health System (AHS). It is very important that we all be supportive, flexible, and fluid as we adjust to meet the needs of our students and staff. In the upcoming weeks, we will share more information with you and encourage you to contact us at 403-500-2001 if you have questions.Enjoy the rest of the summer and remember, we are very happy to be back and look forward to seeing each of you!
