Veterinary Technical Assistant

We offer this free two-year certificate program to Grade 11 students in partnership with Olds College. This is an entry level program that introduces students to the veterinary industry. A VTA works alongside veterinary professionals, animal health technicians and shelter staff. Students complete their High School Diploma requirements using Olds College Veterinary Technical Assistant courses as credits; the program fulfills Alberta Education and the program's requirements. 

Program Benefits 

Successful students may immediately begin working as a VTA after high school; no further post-secondary training or experience is required. Graduates who receive a minimum GPA of 2.0 (62 per cent) will earn:

  • 25 CTS credits at the 30 level
  • An Olds College Certificate of Completion.

Enrolment Requirements

Grade 11 students who apply must commit to this two-year program, have a free fourth period to travel and participate in a small-animal restraint and handling lab. Students must also have completed or be enrolled in:

  • HCS3000 Workplace Safety Systems
  • Biology 20, Chemistry 20 or Science 20 in Semester 1 of Grade 11
  • Math 20-1 or 20-2 in Semester 2 of Grade 11
  • LA 30-1 or 30-2 by end of Grade 12.

Class Times 

Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. at the Olds College, Calgary Campus. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from class. Program content is delivered by instructors from Olds College. A district Off-Campus Education teacher supervises the students and liaises with the college. 


Students are required to purchase their personal protective equipment, such as scrubs, and instructional resources. The cost of this program after high school is approximately $3,700.


Students can apply at their high school through their counsellor, career practitioner or Off-Campus Education teacher.
